Mapping the Valence States of Transition-Metal Elements Using Energy-Filtered Transmission Electron Microscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
The properties of transition-metal oxides are related to the presence of elements with mixed valences, such as Mn and Co. Spatial mapping of the valence-state distribution of transition-metal elements is a challenge to existing microscopy techniques. In this letter, using the valence-state information provided by the white lines observed in electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), an experimental approach is demonstrated to map the valence-state distributions of Mn and Co using the energyfiltered TEM. An optimum spatial resolution of ∼ 2 nm has been achieved for two-phase Co oxides with sharp boundaries. This provides a new technique for quantifying the valence states of cations in magnetic oxides.

The properties of transition metal oxides are related to the presence of elements with mixed valences. The spectroscopy analysis of the valence states is feasible experimentally, but a spatial mapping of valence states of transition metal elements is a challenge to existing microscopy techniques. In this paper, with the use of valence state information provided by the white lines and near-edge ...

Using a combination of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope we demonstrate the possibility of 2D atom by atom valence mapping in the mixed valence compound Mn3O4. The Mn L(2,3) energy-loss near-edge structures from Mn2+ and Mn3+ cation sites ar...

Transition metal oxides are a class of materials that are vitally important for developing new materials with functionality and smartness. The unique properties of these materials are related to the presence of elements with mixed valences. The measurement of cation valence states can be performed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and other chemical techniques, but these techniques are sui...

X-ray emission spectroscopy is widely used as a practical tool for compositional analysis of local specimen area and elemental mapping analysis in electron microscopes. X-rays with energy more than a few keV are dominantly due to electronic transitions between inner-shell electron levels. Those characteristic X-ray energies are useful for assignment of elements. On the other hand, X-rays origin...
متن کاملSpatially resolved surface valence gradient and structural transformation of lithium transition metal oxides in lithium-ion batteries.
Layered lithium transition metal oxides are one of the most important types of cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) that possess high capacity and relatively low cost. Nevertheless, these layered cathode materials suffer structural changes during electrochemical cycling that could adversely affect the battery performance. Clear explanations of the cathode degradation process and it...
